Students are writing personal recounts of an interesting event or experience in their lives. We have read many examples of personal recounts and discussed the characteristics of a personal recount. We know that good writing is preceded by the ability to orally tell a story. Ask your child to tell you about events that happened at school, or sometime last night, or over the weekend. Ask them to include all the components of a personal recount. You can see many of them in the chart. The chart outlines the learning goal and the criteria needed for success! Many students continue to need practise writing using correct capitals, punctuation, grammar, and spelling of high-frequency words. A daily home journal that is regularly shared and corrected with an adult would be a great way not only to practise these writing conventions but also to practise developing ideas and writing about experiences and feelings!

Canada's Food GuideIn Health, students are learning about healthy eating habits. We have begun looking at Canada's Food Guide and the suggested servings per day for our age group. Students are discussing their favourite foods within these food groups and ways to improve eating habits. Involve your child in their eating choices. Plan a grocery shopping trip together! Ask your child how to ensure they have enough servings of each food group per day!
We are working on multiplying 2 digit x 1 digit in math! We have discussed the concepts behind this using grid paper and students have been learning a few different techniques to solving these types of multiplication questions. Below you can see a few different ways that we have talked about. Please practise these regularly at home so that students can retain the information they have used. It doesn't matter what technique students use, but we did learn that using grid paper for bigger numbers can be a problem!
It's speech time again! Students began brainstorming ideas for speech topics today. Students are reminded that speech topics should not read like a report but should be interesting to the audience. Please review the note that was sent home today that explains the important dates and process as well as the attached rubric that will be used to mark their speeches. Students will present their speeches to our Grade 4 class and one student will be chosen to represent Grade 4 in the speech contest at the Royal Canadian Legion on March 2 if he/she chooses. I have included links to the note and rubric below. Also, I have included a link to, and have sent home, an outline to assist students in planning their speech. They may or may not use this outline.

Some are creating pulleys systems that raise or lower objects, some are creating pulley systems that move objects across. Students will be presenting their pulley systems to the class this week. They will explain how they created their pulley systems and how they work. They will be sharing the purpose of their pulley system. Ask your child what pulley system they created and what is it's purpose. Encourage your child to use scientific language in their explanations such as pulley and belt. We are looking forward to seeing their creations!Students are learning to write meaningful connections to the stories they read. A meaningful connection is different from a coincidental connection. Ask your child to tell you the difference! A meaningful connection helps you understand the story. While reading with your children at home, stop and ask them to give you a meaningful connection. Use the sentence starters they are using at school:
