We had a great time and learned so much about habitats and the inter-connectivity of the physical features, populations, and communities within habitats. Thank you so much to our wonderful parent volunteers who came to chaperone!

We have planned a field trip to Hillman Marsh for May 29th! We are excited to make our Habitat unit literally come alive! Today, your child brought home a permission form. Forms and money are due by May 23rd. The fee covers the cost of the program at Hillman Marsh. Our bus cost is covered through fundraising events throughout the year so thank you for participating in those events! If you would like to chaperone on the trip, please fill out the bottom of the permission form. We have room for 3 parents per class (4M and 4Q) on the bus but others may join us at Hillman Marsh if they can provide their own transportation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! Below I have included a link to the permission form if need be.
Students are really enjoying working on their science projects!Habitats Unit Test: Wed., May 7, 2014We have gone over each and every item on the review sheet in class. Students discussed the answers as well as where to find the information to study. We again discussed efficient ways to study including:
Below I have included links to the textbook pages that can be used as reference as well .
As a part of our Science unit on Habitats, students are asked to choose a living thing and create it's habitat. The habitat must include all of the things that a habitat provides for that living thing to survive! This project must be completed totally at school.
In Science, we have been discussing food chains. We have determined that all food that we eat can be traced back to the sun! We played a little game of "Stump the Teacher" by trying to find a food that could not somehow, someway, be traced back to a plant. And we already know that plants need the sun to survive. So far, we cannot think of even one! Students created chains to show foods that are traced back to the sun!Today we reviewed what living things need to survive and how habitats and ecosystems can change. We began an experiment to investigate the non-living things that a lima bean needs to survive. We wrote our hypothesis today and will continue our observations throughout the experiment. Ask your child to tell you what an ecosystem is and what they wrote as their hypothesis about this experiment.
We have begun our science unit on Habitats and Communities. Ask your child to define these scientific words: habitat, population, community, migration. Ask him/her what all habitats have and other facts that he/she has learned so far about habitats!
In our Science unit on Light and Sound we have been discussing high and low pitch sounds. Students created their own instruments to try and vary the pitch of the sound. Students performing with their musical instruments! In Science we continue learning about sound. Today, we learned some interesting facts about how the ear works! Ask your child to tell you ways to keep his/her ears safe. Ask him/her to explain how the vibrations of sound are picked up by the ear and sent to the brain.
