Students are learning to write meaningful connections to the stories they read. A meaningful connection is different from a coincidental connection. Ask your child to tell you the difference! A meaningful connection helps you understand the story. While reading with your children at home, stop and ask them to give you a meaningful connection. Use the sentence starters they are using at school:
The part of the text when.....
reminds me of....
This helps me understand the story because...
Meaningful connections help us understand:
* the main idea or theme
* how a character feels
* the setting
* the problem or solution
* why a character does something
* new information
