Communication in mathematics is very important. It is definitely one of the areas of need in our classroom. Here is an example of problem solving in our measurement unit focusing on communication. Notice that problem solving answers should include a full sentence answer, "show your work", and the "I know because..." communication component. Together we began with a few sentences offered by students and "bumped it up" until we had a comprehensive answer. Please continue to focus on those "How do you know?" parts of homework questions and ask your child how he/she can "bump up" their answer.
We are finishing off our Number Sense unit with division. Students are realizing how memorizing multiplication tables really helps! We have discovered many different strategies to divide. Today, we began working with larger numbers. As an introduction to the concept of long division, students were dividing numbers using Base Ten Blocks.
Students are playing some easy and fun multiplication math games! Ask your child to explain to you how to play Dalmult Dice and Multiplication Math War!
We are working on multiplying 2 digit x 1 digit in math! We have discussed the concepts behind this using grid paper and students have been learning a few different techniques to solving these types of multiplication questions. Below you can see a few different ways that we have talked about. Please practise these regularly at home so that students can retain the information they have used. It doesn't matter what technique students use, but we did learn that using grid paper for bigger numbers can be a problem!
GO CANADA! We are graphing Canada's medals as well as the medals of many other countries! Ask your child how we decided what scale we should use! GO CANADA!
In Math, we have begun our multiplication and division unit. We are discussing many strategies that will help us answer multiplication questions. Ask your child what is theBEST strategy for being able to quickly and accurately answer a multiplication question. I will regularly send home flashcards to help your child memorize multiplication tables. Please assist your child at home by encouraging them to take time to memorize these and to continue to practice regularly. Developing speed and accuracy will help them not just in this unit, in this grade, but throughout their school career. So, memorize those times tables!!!
With our last quiz we have wrapped up our unit on Geometry for Term One. We have moved on to Data Management. We will be using words like data, survey, pictograph, bar graph, circle graph, line graph, title, axes, labels, key, scale, range, mode, mean.
We created some data about our favourite colours in 4M. We used this data to make a pictograph. We learned that pictographs include a specific title, axes, labels, pictures or symbols, and a key. We discovered how to find out the range! Ask your child to explain each of these terms!
Hi, my name is Mrs. Merlo and I have been teaching for a number of years. It is a privilege to spend each and every day with such a wonderful group of children and colleagues.
